You’ve found your contractors in Barrie, you’ve drawn up your plans, you’ve obtained your permits - now it's time to prepare for your renovation.

Here are 5 things you can do to be prepared on your renovation's start date:

1)   Notify your neighbors

Out of respect, it’s always a good idea to let your neighbors know that you are about to undergo major renovations. Renovations can be loud and disruptive, and your neighbors aren’t the ones who are going to reap the benefits when it’s all said and done. Giving them a heads up can sometimes be the difference between angry neighbors, or patient and understanding neighbors.

2)   Plan your living arrangements

Depending on the extent of your renovations, you may have to make alternative living arrangements. These arrangements may have to be for part of the renovation, or for the full renovation period (depending on what you are having done). In some cases you may be able to stay in your home, but will have to be mindful of foot traffic and noise coming through.

Be sure to speak to your contractor regarding this issue. They will be able to give you a better idea as to how long you should make alternative living arrangements, or tips for living in your home while renovations are being completed.

3)   Prepare your home

Your contractor will also be able to give you tips on how to prepare your home for renovations. They may request that you:

●     Store, remove, or cover furniture

●     Remove your valuables

●     Box breakables

●     Take an audit of your belongings

●     Update your security settings

●     Create a safe area for your pet

●     Roll up rugs

4)   Contact your insurance company

Finally, you’ll want to contact your insurance company before undergoing any major renovations. Renovations can affect your insurance in a variety of ways and your insurance company will have some questions. You’ll want to let them know that you plan to carry out a major renovation, and may want to consider extra theft, vandalism, or damage insurance. Once construction with Contractors in Barrie is complete, you’ll also want to have them do a reassessment of your home’s value to reassess your insurance plan.
